Just to clarify, I’m sure not all the rabbis on the other end of the phone with President Golden Calf were from the Reform Movement, but it’s highly likely they made up the lion’s share. Anyway, Ben Smith at Politico reports:
A call with the rabbinate
From the Washington Jewish Week, and confirmed just now by Gibbs:
President Barack Obama needs some outside help pushing health care reform, and he’s turning to rabbis to get it.In a morning conference call with about 1000 rabbis from across the nation, Obama asked for aid: "I am going to need your help in accomplishing necessary reform,” the President told the group, according to Rabbi Jack Moline, who tweeted his way through the phoner.“We are God’s partners in matters of life and death,” Obama went on to say, according to Moline’s real-time stream. [Separation of Church and State alert]
Here’s an excerpt of Obama’s call, also from Politico:
“The one thing that you all share is a moral conviction,” Obama said. “This debate over health care goes to the heart of who we are as American people.”
Obama hit the insurance companies, saying that no one in America should be “pushed to the edge of financial ruin” because of they get sick. [Even if this happens, it's no reason to crap on the Constitution by giving the federal government powers it was never meant to get and control the bodies of every single American.]
And he again brought up the “misinformation” about the plans: “There are some folks out there who are frankly bearing false witness,” he said. [Separation of Church and State alert]
The idea that reform will lead to death panels “is just an extraordinary lie,” he added. [No, you're the liar.]
Obama characterized health care as part of “an ethical and moral obligation … that we look out for one another” and said when it comes to health care “in the wealthiest nation on earth we are neglecting to live out that call.” [Separation of Church and State alert]
Debunking “fabrications” about his reform plans, Obama said: “You’ve heard that this is all going to mean government funding of abortion. Not true.”
Oh really? Then how do you explain this statement you yourself made on July 17, 2007 [h/t El Rushbo]:
In my mind, reproductive care is essential care. It is basic care, and so it is at the center and at the heart of the plan that I propose. Essentially, ... we're going to set up a public plan that all persons and all women can access if they don't have health insurance. It will be a plan that will provide all essential services, including reproductive services [i.e., abortion]. We also will subsidize those who prefer to stay in the private insurance market, except the insurers are going to have to abide by the same rules in terms of providing comprehensive care, including reproductive care.
So when Barack Obama says that government-funded abortion is not covered under this plan, he is a liar, and everyone who echoes him is also a liar.
Politico concludes:
Obama called on the leaders to help him get health care reform by knocking on doors to “spread the facts” and “speak the truth.”
What? The president calling on people to knock on doors? How grassroots! How authentic!
Yet another Politico post clarifies that Obama quoted liturgy from the upcoming Rosh HaShanah holiday:
“We are God’s partners in matters of life and death,” Obama said, according to Moline (paging Sarah Palin...), quoting from the Rosh Hashanah prayer that says that in the holiday period, it is decided “who shall live and who shall die.”
Yes, but that decision is made by God, not by government, you a*hole! How dare you hijack my liturgy to shove socialism down my throat! (Oh, I see a future post on this ...)
What a lying piece of excrement this president is. I'd be very surprised if those on the other side of the phone—including clergy in the Reform Movement, many of whom I know—did nothing more than nod in agreement with their Golden Calf while he soiled our Jewish liturgy for political purposes. Fools.
